Besides a study in history and german philology he startet voice education at the private university Konservatorium Wien, and afterwards at the Viennese music university solo voice and voice educational theory, which was most successfully completed with main emphasis in Lied, oratorio, opera and pedagogy. A scholarship enabled him studying at the Royal College of Music in London, Masterclasses with Emma Kirkby, Michael Chance, Kurt Widmer, Wolfgang Holzmayr and Helena Lazarska supported his musical education. During his studies he already worked with several important groups, such as the choir of the Vienna State Opera, and the Arnold Schoenberg choir where he also had his first experiences as a soloist. In the meantime he appears as bass-soloist under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Erwin Ortner, Martin Haselböck, René Clemencic, and together with orchestras such as the Viennese Concentus Musicus and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchstra, at festivals such as the “Styriarte”/Graz, the Salzburg Festival, the Viennese Festival, the Haydn-Festival Eisenstadt and the Carinthian Summer. Alexander Josef Mayr commands a broad repertoire from the 16th century to actual contemporary music, and often extending the classical repertoire. He developed a particular affinity for Lied-singing, confirmed by successful Lieder-recitals in Austria and abroad. Many music compositions written for his voice also confirm his great interest in the contemporary music.
