"Do not miss any opportunity to make music together with others,
medium parts in particular. This will increase your musicality"
from "Robert Schumann / Musical rules for home and life"
Until a few decades ago it was self-evident for a violinist to play the viola too. The violists Bach, Mozart and Beethoven are well-known. David Oistrakh was required to study each violin concerto on the viola before. There are recordings by Yehudi Menuhin, Maxim Vengerov and Nigel Kennedy which are by far superior to those of some viola specialists.
Viola playing offers the opportunity to obtain force, to increase the quality of and the sensibility for sound, to experience the music from a completely different side, and to become musical – maybe, alike Bach or Mozart.
