Knut Schoch

The tenor KNUT SCHOCH received his first musical training in the Hamburg Boys' Choir St. Michaelis, studied at the Hamburg Academy of Music and continues to take further lessons, including with Margreet Honig since 2005.

After an intensive study of so-called ‘early music’, with which he has gained a great reputation all over the world, he shifted and expanded the focus of his work as a historically informed and performance-savvy singer into the 20th century. Today, he is just as familiar with the baroque and classical languages of sound as he is with the romantic love of sound and sensuality of words.

He has earned an international reputation as an interpreter of the cantatas and oratorios of Bach (evangelist), Handel and contemporaries, and his sophisticated, nuanced and comprehensible performances are repeatedly praised. He also devotes a great deal of time to song, chamber music and baroque and classical opera: he has performed worldwide in works by Monteverdi, Purcell, Keiser, Steffani, Telemann and Mozart, among others.

As a soloist, he can be heard on important stages and is a much sought-after guest at renowned festivals; tours take him to almost every country in Europe, Asia, America and Australia. He has taken part in many radio and television productions and can be heard on over 100 CDs. In addition to the established repertoire, he also devotes himself tirelessly to the revival of lesser-known works and the discovery of forgotten gems.

From 1993-2021 he taught at the Hamburg Conservatory, from 1999-2002 he taught as a professor at the Hamburg University of Music, from 2008-2014 at the Bremen University of the Arts and in 2021 he was appointed professor at the Nuremberg University of Music. He has also been a guest lecturer at universities in Japan, Australia, China, Hong Kong, the USA, Portugal and Finland, among others, and gives masterclasses for singing worldwide.
